STRENGTHENING YOUTH-SERVING COALITION FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ADOLESCENT AND YOUTH-FRIENDLY HEALTH SERVICES (AYFHS) IN BENUE, KWARA, NASARAWA STATES, AND FCT.

This 12-month project, funded by Management Sciences for Health (MSH) and implemented by Women Friendly Initiative (WFI) and Novel Association for Youth Advocacy (NAYA), aimed to strengthen advocacy for the implementation of Nigeria’s National AYFHS Guidelines within Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities.

WFI built NAYA members’ technical capacity in effective advocacy, resource mobilization, and accountability to drive the enforcement of these policies.

Key Achievements:

  • Developed advocacy roadmaps and briefs.
  • Conducted 2 advocacy visits, 2 policy dialogues, 2 stakeholder meetings, and 2 media briefings.
  • Reached key stakeholders, including Ministries of Health, State PHC Development Agencies, and Local Authorities.

Impact:

  • Secured government commitment and funding, leading to a dedicated budget line for AYFHS in Benue State and draft budget lines in Kwara and Nasarawa States.
  • Designated 3 PHCs in Benue as model AYFHS facilities and trained 25 health workers.
  • Reactivated 3 AYFHS Centres in Nasarawa and established a State Adolescent Health Working Group.
  • Upgraded 4 PHC facilities in Kwara State to deliver improved AYFHS services.

This project contributed significantly to advancing young people’s access to quality, youth-friendly healthcare services across target states.
